AOYKC 2011 Draw Released

Hi All,

Exciting news - today the draw has been released for the tournament. Eight teams are confirmed which will create a truly international tournament and a chance for us to meet Korfballers from all over the Asia-Oceania region. The pools are based on current world rankings at U23 level and we have ended up with a tough challenge ahead of us. In our pool are Chinese Taipei (one of the top three teams in the world), China (an emerging strength in Korfball), and Pakistan (new-comers to the international scene with this being only their second international tournament). At this stage we are unsure where we need to finish to gain qualification to the World Champs in Barcelona, however indications are that a top 4 finish should get us there.

Two Weeks To Go

The New Zealand Under 23 Korfball Team has just completed their final training camp in preparation for the 2011 Asia Oceania Youth Korfball Championships to be held in Adelaide, Australia from 9-16 July. This tournament also doubles as a qualification tournament for the World Youth Korfball Championships which will be staged in Barcelona, Spain in 2012.

Preparation for the tournament has been somewhat hampered by Christchurch's many seismic events over the past nine months. We have been forced to move and cancel training camps, change venues at short notice and miss many of our normal training sessions due to the closure of facilities in Christchurch. Fortunately, those players based in other centres have continued to train hard for the tournament. All of this has been a true test of the resolve of the team but it has been heartening to watch everyone support each other through these challenges and show genuine concern for all members of our Korf Family.

Our journey begins on July 7 2011, when those based in Christchurch will depart at 9.10am to meet the rest of the team in Auckland. Once we arrive in Adelaide later that day we will link up with our Australian based coach to fine tune for our first game on July 9.

Keep on eye on here for regular updates from the team and  match reports including some photos of our experiences.
